FAQ human health

  • Stress is the natural response of the body and mind to daily tension and pressure. It is not a disease, everyone can experience stress.

  • In collaboration with the University of Nancy, Ingredia Dairy Experts developed Lactium®, a unique and natural milk protein hydrolysate. Used worldwide in many applications (dietary supplements and functional foods), Lactium® is an excellent ally to better help you to manage stress.

  • A hydrolysate is the product of hydrolysis, a process that breaks down a protein into smaller parts so that the body can absorb it more easily. This is achieved by using an enzyme.

  • Lactium® was discovered by observing the calm state of infants after drinking milk. This bioactive compound is the result of over 10 years of research and development.

  • Lactium® is a natural ingredient from cow’s milk.

  • No, because the decapeptide found in Lactium® is not present in milk. In fact, Lactium® is the result of hydrolysis specifically linked to trypsin.

  • The active compound is a decapeptide with calming properties, contained in the milk protein hydrolysate known as alpha-casozepine.

  • Lactium® acts on GABAa receptors in the brain, specifically at the benzodiazepine binding site, via the decapeptide to reduce the perception of stress.

  • Nine clinical studies were conducted between 1999 and 2018 on over 500 adult volunteers, all supervised by healthcare professionals. These studies confirmed Lactium®’s efficacy through biological measurements.

  • Clinical studies in humans have shown that Lactium® can be taken either in the morning or evening, with observed efficacy in both cases. The relevant dose can be adapted based on individual needs:

    • Acute event-related stress: 600 mg the evening before the event (1–2 hours before bedtime) and 600 mg on the morning of the event.
    • Daily stress: 150 mg/day for one month (single morning dose) or 300 mg/day for 15 days (1-2 doses: morning and evening).
    • Sleep disorders linked to stress: 150 mg/day for one month or 300 mg/day for 15 days (single evening dose 1–2 hours before bedtime).

  • Lactium® has been shown to act within 90 to 120 minutes after consumption. However, the feeling of well-being usually appears after 1 to 2 weeks of supplementation, depending on the dosage.

  • Caffeine consumption is discouraged while taking Lactium® as it inhibits its effects.

  • Lactium®, being of natural origin, is suitable for all ages, including children and pregnant women, provided the recommended dosage is respected. It is recommended for individuals struggling to manage or overcome stress, including:

    • Those facing acute stress (e.g., exams, interviews, presentations).
    • Those going through difficult periods (e.g., bereavement, unemployment, divorce).
    • Those experiencing symptoms related to chronic stress (e.g., sleep issues, mood swings, overeating).
    • People undergoing smoking or alcohol cessation.
    • Individuals weaning off anxiolytics (consult a doctor).

  • Lactium® poses no health risks when it’s used at the recommended dosages. It does not cause side effects such as addiction, sedation, drowsiness, or memory loss. Unlike benzodiazepines, which can cause dependency, Lactium® is non-addictive and does not impair attention or alertness.

  • Individuals with severe lactose intolerance can generally tolerate 7–12 g of lactose daily. Lactium® contains about 0.6% lactose. A 150 mg daily dose of Lactium® corresponds to 0.9 mg of lactose, making it safe for lactose-intolerant individuals1. Lactium® has been consumed worldwide for over 15 years without any reports of adverse effects related to lactose or its dairy origin.

  • Lactium® can be taken before sports competitions to manage tension, improve sleep, and enhance focus. It can also aid post-event recovery. It is not listed as a controlled substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

  • Lactium® may complement behavioral therapy but is not a medication. It cannot replace prescribed treatments for anxiety or depressive disorders.

  • Ingredia ensures food safety and traceability for Lactium® through ISO 9001 and FSSC 22000 certifications. Each batch is rigorously monitored, with the concentration of the active peptide measured by HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography).
