FAQ pet health

  • Stress is the natural reaction of the body to any unusual situation. It is not a disease, all animals can experience stress.

  • Stress triggers behavioral issues such as avoidance, aggression, urine marking, scratching, compulsive licking leading to alopecia, inappropriate elimination, gastrointestinal problems, vomiting, or even diseases like feline idiopathic cystitis.

  • Stress triggers behavioral issues such as avoidance or, conversely, hyper-attachment, attention-seeking, vocalizations, destructive behavior (pacing, digging, chewing), aggression, excessive licking (paws, coat), changes in eating habits (anorexia, vomiting, gastrointestinal issues), and inappropriate elimination.

  • In collaboration with the University of Nancy, Ingredia Dairy Experts developed Lactium®, a unique and natural milk protein hydrolysate. Used in various applications (complete and complementary feed) worldwide, Lactium® is an excellent ally to help your pets better manage stress.

  • A hydrolysate is the result of hydrolysis, a process that breaks down proteins into smaller parts to make them easier for the body to absorb. This hydrolysis is achieved by using an enzyme.

  • Lactium® was discovered by observing the state of calm experienced by infants after drinking milk. This bioactive compound is the result of over 10 years of research and development.

  • Lactium® is a natural ingredient from cow’s milk.

  • The active compound is a decapeptide with soothing properties, found in the milk protein hydrolysate known as alpha-casozepine.

  • Lactium® acts on GABAa receptors in the brain, specifically at the benzodiazepine binding site, via the decapeptide to reduce the perception of stress.

  • Yes, Lactium® can be administered to animals such as dogs, cats, birds and horses. Events like a change in routine, moving house, construction work, travel, vet visits, or social interactions can all cause stress in animals.

  • Lactium® has been the subject of five clinical studies (2 on cats, 2 on dogs, and 1 on horses), conducted between 2007 and 2021. These studies confirmed Lactium®’s efficacy in pets through biological measurements.

  • The effective dose confirmed by clinical studies is:

    • 15 mg/kg/day for dogs and cats
    • 1 g/day for horses (160-205 kg)

  • When a stressful event is known and predictable, it is recommended to administer Lactium® a few days before. In clinical studies on animals, Lactium® was administered either in the morning or evening, with effectiveness observed in both cases.

  • Depending on the level of stress and the animal’s personality, owners have reported improvements in stress symptoms within 3 to 10 days (for the most stressed animals). It is important to maintain daily administration of Lactium® at the recommended dose to achieve and sustain results. Lactium® can be stopped once the stressful event has passed, or in chronic cases, it can be administered for 1 month before second veterinary opinion.

  • Lactium® can be administered to puppies and kittens, as well as pregnant or lactating queens and bitches. It can also be given to senior cats and dogs

  • Lactium® poses no health risk at recommended doses. It does not cause any side effects: no addiction, sedation, drowsiness, or memory loss. Additionally, it does not impair attention or alertness. Unlike benzodiazepines, which are known for their side effects, Lactium® doesn’t cause addiction. Thanks to the absence of amnesia, your pet can learn to adapt to repetitive stressful situations.

  • Lactium® poses no risk of intolerance due to its low lactose content.

  • In horses, Lactium® is especially recommended to manage:

    • Acute stressful situations: training, competitions, transport, clipping, shoeing, etc.
    • Changes in environment or lifestyle (stall confinement), rider, caretaker, or companion.
    • Learning situations: breaking in, starting jumping, loading, or overcoming phobias.

However, it is not recommended for chronic anxiety conditions (such as cribbing).

For competitions, depending on the regulations in the host country, you may need to declare the use of Lactium® to the competition veterinary and obtain their approval.

  • Lactium® can be combined with behavioral therapy but is not a medication. As a result, it cannot replace any medical treatment prescribed for anxiety or depressive disorders. In practice, some veterinarians use Lactium® during the weaning of anxiolytics.

  • With ISO 9001 and FSSC 22000 certifications, Ingredia ensures food safety and traceability for Lactium® throughout its production chain. Each batch of Lactium® is rigorously controlled, with the active peptide concentration measured using HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography).
